Hawaiian Vacation Tips - Things To Do On Maui
There are eight islands that make up the Hawaiian chain, including the most commonly visited which are Maui, The Big Island, Oahu, and Kauai. Six of these eight islands are inhabited and four of these six host the tourism that is the heart of Hawaii’s economy. Before picking an island for your Hawaiian vacation, find about things to do on Maui and the other islands first.
Here’s a little quick history. Since 1995 when the last sugar plantation in hawaii was closed, Hawaii’s entire economy is dependent upon tourism. As you probably know, the cost of living in Hawaii is high; however, the views and culture certainly make it worth your while. Hawaii is also the 50th state to join the United States. One of the great things about visiting Hawaii is that you get an entirely different cultural experience, but you don’t have to have a passport, get any special vaccinations, exchange currency or learn another language, assuming you are from the U.S. or another English speaking country.
You’ve heard all the talk about Hawaii and how luxurious it is, but what is there really to do but spend money and see a lot of plants? You would be surprised at what Hawaii has to offer. Keep in mind that the climate is always around 70-80 degrees and it is sunny year long too. There are great activities to enjoy on every island, but we think there are more things to do on Maui than on Kauai or The Big Island.
Maui is known as the Valley Isle because of the beautiful valleys formed by the West Maui Mountains. Maui is chalked full of things to do and places to explore. You can go on the Lahaina Kaanapali Railroad and explore in style the city of Lahaina. On this toured railroad ride you can learn a small historical piece of Hawaii’s sugar cane plantations and how the trains would not only hall the sugar cane for transport, but the workers to and from the plantations. The train ride is a six mile stretch that travels over a 325 foot wooden trestle. You can see the West Maui Mountains and from December to April you would see the humpback whales playing in Hawaii’s Pacific waters.
Perhaps you just want to see what Maui is all about from the air. Take a helicopter ride and explore the rainforests, view the waterfalls or peek into a volcano. Whatever the thrill, taking a helicopter is definitely a great way to view the island.
Maybe this Hawaiian trip is just about relaxation. You could check out the Maui Arts and Cultural Center or watch one of the colorful luau shows. A typical luau show consists of lots of laughing, dancing and singing. You can be a part of it or just a spectator. Dinner is served via a roast pig cooked in the ground (called an imu), followed by a traditional ceremony. The pig is served with sweet potatoes, salmon, fresh fish, macaroni salad and tons of desserts. All of this is followed by the entertainment. There are different types of luaus offered all over the island, so find out what type is showing and you can book yourself a spot.
Other types of activities offered on Maui’s island are afternoon snorkel and dive trips, cruises and sailing. There is never a dull minute on this island, so enjoy!
